The Oscar-winning director has signed on to shoot a documentary about influential reggae musician-songwriter Bob Marley. The feature doesn't have a title yet, but it does have a release date: February 6, 2010, the 65th anniversary of Marley's birth.
The film has the support of the Marley family; son Ziggy Marley is acting as one of the executive producers. As with "Shine a Light," property heir Steve Bing is financing.
Marley died of cancer in 1981 at age 36 and achieved iconic status posthumously. Several attempts have been made to bring his story to the screen, but none have come to fruition.
Scorsese is preparing to direct "Shutter Island," an adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Michelle Williams.
