Gay Activists Try To Ban Elephant Man and Sizzla from Canada

Canadian Gay Rights Lobbyist and the US based “Stop Murder Music” Campaign, have decided to convince city officials in Ottawa to ban Sizzla and Elephant Man because of their refusal to sign the Reggae Compassion Act.

Akim Larcher, a spokesperson for the Stop Murder Music campaign said, "Artists have the right to free speech, but their presence in Canada can be perceived as a licence to incite violence. Canada has banned anti-Jew, anti-black people from entering the country. This should be no different. "

Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada, a campaign supporter also added, "Concert promoters have a responsibility not to provide a platform for artists that openly promote violence against any group in society. We hope that the promoters will do the right thing and cancel these concerts."

Elephant Man is scheduled to perform a 12 date tour in Canada starting in Winnipeg this Thursday, while Sizzla and Elephant are both scheduled to appear at Queens Quay in September and October. However, there is no word on whether the concerts will be canceled as yet and whether Sizzla and Elephant Man will be officially banned from the country.

50 Cent to Retire From the Music Industry?

It seems since Kanye West has officially beaten 50 Cent in album sales, the rapper may be keeping his word about retiring if he lost to him.

The rapper has decided not to make an appearance at the Music of Black Origin Awards, Vodafone Live Music Awards and canceled his European tour. He also had his spokesman release this statement.
"50 Cent is very sad to confirm that due to a last-minute, unforeseen and unanticipated change in his schedule he will have to postpone his European promotional trip scheduled to take place from September 18 to 25"

However, he showed humility in defeat as he released this statement when he lost to Kanye West by almost 265,000 copies. He said"I am very excited to have participated in one of the biggest album release weeks in the last two years. Collectively, we have sold hundreds of thousands of units in our debut week. This marks a great moment for hip hop music, one that will go down in history."

BRAMMA-HEADING TO THE TOP/STAND ALONE

Verizon To Continue Use Of Marley Ringtones

Just when we thought the battle would be over, Verizon has decided to continue using Bob Marley's ringtones, and pictures as part of their wireless campaign, despite the threat of a law suit for trademark infringement.

According to reports, Verizon feels that Universal Music Group should deal with the legal issues because their contract was made with UMG and not the Marley family. A spokeswoman for the company said "[UMG and the Marley family] need to work out their differences. This was not a matter for us, we[Verizon] have done nothing wrong."

In response, Chris Blackwell, the Marley estate representative, expressed that they will continue to follow through on their law suit because of Verizon's decision to not back down. He said, "We are filing the lawsuit because they went back on their word. Verizon said they would take it down and they did. Now they say they are putting it back up, we are filing 100 percent"

Elephant Man Gives Diddy A Beatdown

According to reports, Elephant Man and a few of his entourage allegedly attacked Diddy at his Bad Boy Record Label company.

A source from the office explained that the altercation may have been over a financial disagreement as Elephant Man seemed to have been arguing over money. They said "I couldn’t really understand what Elephant Man was saying, but it was definitely about money … He kept saying that he wanted his money and in between all the money talk he was kept saying bombo claat and ras claat and other words I couldn’t understand.”

The source also said that there was a lot of "commotion and stuff was breaking" and that Diddy's sunglasses "looked like they were bent up and they heard that his lip was busted.”

So far Diddy has yet to file charges, but it seems he may have chosen the wrong card in the pack to play with.

Verizon Drops Bob Marley Ringtones

Verizon Wireless decided to drop Bob Marley's ringtones, ringbacks and pictures after being threatened legally by the Marley family for using his image and songs to promote their business without the family's consent.

Universal Music Group who are partnered with Verizon issued this statement and said, ""We are disappointed that the management of the Marley Estate has chosen to take such an extreme and meritless position that a customary promotional campaign highlighting the availability of Marley mastertones somehow constitutes an 'endorsement' of Verizon overall."

It is unclear whether the Marley family will continue to file a lawsuit against Verizon and UMG but their representative Chris Blackwell said, "they refuse to give the musicians the respect they deserve...I am infuriated that Verizon would go around the estate and initiate partnership with Universal Music Group."

Rihanna Wins Top Awards at VMA's

At the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, held on September 9 at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Rihanna took home two of the most coveted awards of the evening.

The Bajan star won Best Video of the Year for her hit song "Umbrella", beating Beyonce's Irreplaceable and Kanye West's "Stronger". She also won another award for "Umbrella", Monster Single of the Year.

However, Kanye was far from happy when he lost to Rihanna for Video of the Year and as a result, threw a tantrum when he realized once again he was snubbed
of an award after being nominated in five categories. He said "That's two years in a row, man..give a black man a chance. I'm trying hard man, I have the ... number one record, man."

Also, in an effort to try and dispel the rumors about her romantic involvement with the "Tranformers" star, Shia LaBeouf, she made a solo appearance on the red carpet and reportedly spent most of time with R&B artist, Chris Brown, at the after party. With arguably one of the best performances this year, it is being speculated that both Chris and Rihanna may be making plans to collaborate for another hit song.

Sean Kingston Faces Protest

Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" faces protest in New Mexico because of it's suicidal message.

Joan Murphy, Chairman of New Mexico's Suicide Prevention Coalition, has demanded that Kingston's song be pulled from the airwaves because of it's message on how to deal with personal problems. She explained that the song would only be increasing the suicidal rate within the country and is portraying suicide as something positive rather than negative.

Regardless of her protest, the song's popularity seems unflattering as it was heavily rotated on the radio stations and topped their music charts. Nonetheless, the Coalition feels the media has to play a role in promoting material that is appropriate for young adults and urges that they take responsibility for censoring what is being fed to the public.
