Beenie Man Released On Bail

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) -- A Jamaican judge released Grammy winning musician Beenie Man on $21,100 bail Monday after he appeared in court on tax evasion charges.

Jamaican authorities say the singer and rapper, whose real name is Anthony Moses Davis, owes about $661,000 in overdue taxes in his Caribbean homeland. He is due back in court Dec. 3.

The 34-year-old Kingston native broke onto the U.S. charts in 1998 with the hit single "Who Am I" and accompanying album "Many Moods of Moses."

In 2001, he won a Grammy for his album "Art and Life."

Recently, Beenie Man has come under pressure from gay rights groups in Britain and the U.S. who say some songs have anti-gay lyrics.

Rapper T.I Released on Bond

ATLANTA (AP) -- Rapper T.I. was released on bond Friday, but he'll be confined to his home to await trial on weapons charges.

T.I. (real name: Clifford Harris) walked out of the federal courthouse in downtown Atlanta after posting a $3 million bond - $2 million in cash and $1 million in equity on property he owns.

"I want to thank all the fans for their support," Harris said as he left the courthouse. "Due to the severity of the situation, I can't say much more."

Before hopping into a black sport utility vehicle, he added, "I want to get all of this behind me."

U.S. Magistrate Judge Alan Baverman agreed to the bond over government objections so long as Harris follows certain conditions, including remaining in a home except for medical appointments and court appearances.

Harris also was required to surrender his passport, not own any guns and stay away from witnesses and informants in the case. The only people who will be allowed to live with him are his girlfriend and children. Visitors must be approved by the court.

Baverman sternly warned him against violating conditions of his bond.

The judge said that if Harris gets into any trouble or violates the terms of his release, "a number of very bad things will happen." That includes his bond being revoked and any sentence he receives later being potentially increased.

Harris told Baverman he understood the conditions.

A status conference in the case is set for Nov. 5.

More than 60 supporters - family members, friends and fans - stood outside the federal courtroom during the hearing. Some of the rapper's supporters held up signs with pictures of the rapper and wore shirts saying "Free T.I." on the front and "Let your haters be your motivators" on the back.

Authorities say that on Oct. 13, about an hour before a scheduled performance at the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta, Harris showed up to buy unregistered machine guns and silencers. He already had three guns in his car - one of them loaded - when he was arrested, authorities say.

Harris, 27, faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.

'The Harder They Come' Tops Vanity Fair's List

Vanity Fair has listed Jimmy Cliff's 'The Harder They Come' soundtrack as the number three all time greatest.

NEW YORK -- If you've hummed along, tapped your feet or even danced in your seat while watching "Purple Rain," "Saturday Night Fever" or "Trainspotting," you're not alone.

The soundtracks from those movies have been named among the 50 greatest by the editors of Vanity Fair magazine. The full list will be revealed next month in a one-time Conde Nast magazine, Movies Rock, for subscribers of its 14 titles.

"Purple Rain" topped the chart even though it was described as "perhaps the best badly acted film ever," editors at Vanity Fair said, while "Trainspotting" came in at No. 7 and "Saturday Night Fever" was eighth.

The Vanity Fair editors said the "Purple Rain" soundtrack was a flawless combination of "funk, R&B, pop, metal, and even psychedelia into a sound that defined the '80s."

"A Hard Day's Night" came in a No. 2, followed by "The Harder They Come," "Pulp Fiction," "The Graduate" and "Superfly." "American Graffiti" and "The Big Chill" rounded out the top 10. "Saturday Night Fever's" soundtrack is "required listening for anyone looking to heat up the dance floor," the editors said. "The white suit? Not so much."

Movies Rock, which will feature stories and photos of the projects, stars, directors and musicians who created the selected movies, launches ahead of a two-hour CBS broadcast of the same title in December.

Arrest Warrant Issued For Beenie Man

KINGSTON (Reuters) - A Jamaican judge issued an arrest warrant for reggae musician Beenie Man after he failed to turn up in court to answer tax evasion charges on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old singer and dance hall DJ, whose real name is Anthony Moses Davis, was scheduled to appear in court to tell how he planned to pay taxes owed for more than a decade.

"I am surprised that he has not appeared before me," Judge Owen Parkins said before issuing the warrant. "This case is well publicized and he should have been in court. No one is above the law."

Beenie Man faced the court three weeks earlier and was told he owed the Jamaican revenue department US$415,000 in unpaid taxes plus US$246,000 in penalties. He said then that he was unaware he owed the money and that the company that formerly managed his business affairs was responsible for paying the taxes.

The Kingston native won a Grammy award for Best Reggae Album for his 2000 release "Art and Life."

Lucky Dube Killed By Gunmen

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Gunmen shot reggae star Lucky Dube in front of his children in one of South Africa's highest-profile murders, uniting political rivals in calls for a crackdown on violent crime.

Dube, 43, was killed in an apparent botched carjacking on Thursday evening in a Johannesburg suburb. Police are searching for three suspects, police spokesman Eugene Opperman said.

"They allegedly tried to take his vehicle, but then shots were fired and he was fatally wounded," Opperman said.

Police said he was dropping his son off when the attack took place. Another of his children was in the car.

The murder of South Africa's biggest-selling reggae singer cast a shadow over the national mood a day before the country's rugby union team face England in the final of the World Cup.

President Thabo Mbeki said his countrymen should work together to cut crime in South Africa, which has one of the world's highest murder rates.

"Even as we prepare to celebrate the victory of the Springboks we must also grieve the death of an outstanding South African and, indeed, make a commitment that we shall continue to act together as a people to confront this terrible scourge of crime, which has taken the lives of too many of our people -- and does so every day," he said.

Foxy Brown Goes To Court And Pleads Not Guilty

NEW YORK (AP) -- Foxy Brown was singing a different tune Tuesday when she showed up in court four days after refusing to appear to face assault charges.

The 28-year-old rapper, who is serving a year at Rikers Island prison for violating probation, arrived at Brooklyn state Supreme Court wearing casual street clothing.

She pleaded not guilty to charges that she threw a cell phone at a neighbor who complained about the volume of her car radio. The plea was entered by her attorney, John Sampson, the district attorney's office said.

Sampson didn't immediately return a call for comment.

Last Friday, Brown twice refused to appear in court for her arraignment. Prosecutors rescheduled her appearance for Tuesday, warning that if she refused to show up, the court would issue an order allowing correction officers to put her in handcuffs and force her onto a bus.

Brown was arrested in the New York City borough of Brooklyn in August and accused of striking Arlene Raymond, 25, after the pair got into a fight July 30 over Brown blasting her car stereo near her home.

She was arraigned on charges of assault, attempted assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon - the cell phone.

Justice John Ingram extended Raymond's order of protection to Dec. 18, 2008, and ordered Brown back in court Dec. 17.

Brown is in jail for violating probation - skipping her anger management classes and traveling out of the city without permission - in a Manhattan case involving a fight she had with manicurists in a nail salon three years ago.

The rapper, whose real name is Inga Marchand, has a new album, "Brooklyn's Don Diva," due out next month.

Rapper T.I Denied Bail

ATLANTA (AP) -- T.I. was ordered Monday to remain in custody on federal weapons charges until a bail hearing later this week.

The chart-topping rapper was arrested Saturday, hours before his scheduled performance at the BET Hip Hop Awards. Federal authorities say he tried to buy three machine guns and two silencers from a man cooperating with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.

T.I., born Clifford Harris, appeared briefly in federal court Monday. Wearing a black shirt and black jeans, he entered the courtroom expressionless and scanned the crowd filled with family, supporters and media.

The government wants to keep the 27-year-old rapper in custody as the case proceeds, but his attorneys planned to argue for his release on bond at a hearing scheduled for Friday.

A federal firearms dealer contacted the ATF this month about a man seeking to buy a machine gun without registering the weapon, according to a criminal complaint filed Saturday in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.

After attempting to purchase several machine guns from an undercover ATF agent, the unnamed individual - who said he had been a bodyguard for T.I. since July 2007 - was arrested. He began cooperating with the government and said that he was buying the machine guns and silencers for Harris, a convicted felon, the complaint said.

T.I. ended up winning two awards at Saturday's show.

Foxy Brown Refuses Court Appearance

NEW YORK (AP) -- Foxy Brown, who is serving a one-year jail term, twice refused to get on a correction department bus Friday for a court appearance, the prosecutor's office said.

The 28-year-old rapper was arrested in August and accused of striking Arlene Raymond, 25, after the pair got into a fight July 30 over Brown blasting her car stereo near her home in the New York City borough of Brooklyn.

On Friday, Brown refused to be taken from Rikers Island prison to be arraigned in Brooklyn Supreme Court.

She is now scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, the prosecutor's office said. If Brown refuses, the court could issue an order allowing correction officers to put her in handcuffs and force her onto the bus.

Brown, whose real name is Inga Marchand, is serving a year in jail for violating probation - skipping her court-ordered anger management classes and traveling out of the city without permission. The probation stemmed from her fight with manicurists in a New York City nail salon three years ago.

Her new album, "Brooklyn's Don Diva," is set for release Nov. 20.
